The Department of History of Art and Architecture offers a variety of internship opportunities for its undergraduate students to gain professional experience in galleries, museums and the cultural sector. Students can gain work experience in several ways:
Academic Internships
Museum Studies students can secure an internship for academic credit as part of their requirements. These take place during the fall and spring semesters, and include regular cohort meetings to ensure interns maximise their professional opportunities of their roles. Students should enroll in HAA0106 Internship Preparation (1 credit) in the semester before they plan to undertake an internship. This class is a prerequisite for HAA1905 Museum Studies Internship (3 credits). Students with questions about this process may contact Alex Taylor alex.taylor@pitt.edu.
Summer Fellowships
Students can apply for highly-competitive summer fellowships offered at local cultural institutions with the support of the Fine Foundation and other partners. These fellowships occur each summer, and iinclude a stipend payment for full time positions of $4000. Past positions have been hosted at such institutions as the Andy Warhol Museum, Carnegie Museum of Art, Carnegie Museum of Natural History, Heinz History Center, Contemporary Craft and many other local arts institutions. National Internships
Our students have also been competitive, securing appointments at national internship programs at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Barnes Foundation, the Guggenheim Museum, the Smithsonian Institutions, and elsewhere.
